Before I was a parent, I didn’t really give my health
much thought.
Not only was I a smoker and a junk food addict, I really didn’t know anything about nutrition or how my body stored energy. When I became a mother all of that changed.
I became interested in the food my family was eating, slowly at first. Using baby steps, I managed to change the way that my family ate and viewed their food. And using this blog I managed to influence people around me, both those already in my life and people I met through my social media involvement, to encourage healthy eating within their families.
Throughout my own journey I have learned and changed so much in our home. I’ve made nutrition and healthy living a huge priority in my life.
I’m not alone. Many families in BC are feeling the crunch to shed the processed life by buying more fresh and natural foods.
It’s never easy to undertake a life change, and living healthy is no exception.
It’s important to feel connected and supported. It’s important to feel like you have someplace to go where you’ll find the resources and information that you need.
As a parent, I’ve been really looking for an initiative from our government to bring attention to the growing disconnect between citizens and their food.
I’m glad to be able to say that initiative is here today. With a growing presence through traditional advertising, as well as an outreach in social media, Healthy Families BC has made it easy to reach out for support and resources. Creating conversations about healthy living ideas on their Facebook wall, as well as awesome tips and tricks on their Twitter feed, Healthy Families BC also runs an extensive website where you can find information, support, resources and encouragement. The website will help you learn more about what your body needs, versus the intake of harmful additives in many of today’s processed foods.
Aside from these amazing online resources and meeting places through social media, Healthy Families BC are involved in innovative programs being introduced to different schools in British Columbia to help introduce primary school children to fresh and local foods. In fact, Abby’s school has been selected as a part of this program. I am proud to lend my entire support to this and other programs that help encourage healthy lifestyles in families across BC and North America.
Healthy Families BC is reaching out to British Columbians to show them why and how they should be making positive changes to their lifestyles. As part of this program, Healthy Families BC has collaborated with some of British Columbia’s top bloggers to offer an awesome giveaway.
I am so proud to announce that with Healthy Families BC, I’m able to offer one of my lucky readers a $250 Lululemon Active-Wear Gift Card to help you and your family look great while you stay active. All you have to do is lend your support to Healthy Families BC by getting involved in their social media outreach.

I follow them on Twitter and Facebook. One healthy change is that the kids now have to drink one glass of milk and one glass of water each day before they get a glass of juice…and then they’re back to water again. Plus we always walk or ride our bikes when we can, instead of driving.
I love this! I need something like this to encourage me. One step that I have already made is trying to create more from scratch, thereby taking out those additives that are very UNHEALTHY for my boys. My favorite change has been homemade tomato sauce. I use tomato sauce A LOT and before I read your blog I had no idea how easy it was to make it at home. Now I never use the canned or jarred stuff and it is so much better-and healthier for my guys! Thanks Lindsday! I also have now started following Healthy Families on Twitter and liked them on Facebook.

Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables! A lot of processed food comes through my house and, since I’m usually the one who cooks when we’re all eating together, I try and use only fresh products. Plus fall veggies are awesome! I’m excited to try some new recipes!
recently my family has been doing 1 outdoor activity a night( bike ride , walk or play a sport game)
Also I have taken away juice and give my children water or milk. Now my son only asked for water
I follow them on twitter ( my twitter name is FOKXXY) and facebook ( Summer P.)
We bough pedal bikes this year for everyone and now try and bike daily to one place we would normally go in the car, corner store , beaches, friends houses. Its working out pretty good.
On days we don’t have commitments to go… we take the dog for an extra long walk instead.

ohh i could definitely go back to eating more fruits & vegetables, and reducing my carbon footprint while i’m at it by eating less processed and packaged foods. in fact, i think i shall do this. and.. quit smoking
that’s generally good for not only my family, but everyone around me who doesn’t smoke (at all, or anymore). I WILL BE COMING TO YOU FOR HELP! lol ♥
Anytime you need help, I’m available.

(Chrysta A.) One healthy change we recently made is taking our kids for a long hike every weekend. Not only is it great excerise but it is a great way to spend time as a family (without spending a penny!). In the food department we all try to make sure we fill our fruit/veggie qouta before making another food choice. Gotta fill up on the healthy stuff first!
I strive to eat 80% unprocessed foods and attempt to live an active lifestyle by going for walks and going to the gym or home gym. Just last year I put on a lot of weight while my dad was sick with cancer and dying. I was very stressed and time-constrained and put aside the 80/20 rule and was too tired/sad to be active.
I am now back on the 80/20 rule and family life has normalized enough to have a bit more time to concentrate on healthy eating and activity. I am ready to start shedding the pounds again (this will be my third weight loss journey – first when I gained a bit of weight after high school and the second when I had my daughter).
I think the one change to my daily routine will be to keep being outdoorsy even in the rain. We are pretty outdoorsy but only when the weather is nice haha. To do this I have already bought a water resistant jacket (from Lulu!) and will be on the search for good jackets and rain gear for my hubby and daughter. We used to “melt” in the rain but this time around I will not let the rain keep me away from enjoying the great outdoors!!
And if I win the GC I REALLY need a good sports bra for my gym visits LOL.
liked and tweeted… i even signed up for twitter just to enter.
I have made a lot of changes to have a healthy life style. After high school i gained 30 pounds because I didn’t even realize what I was putting in my body. I thought I could still eat whatever I wanted and get away with it. It eventually caught up with me and I wasn’t very happy.
Just over a year ago, I made more of an effort to pack my own lunches for work for work, which I made sure always included a salad or some sort of vegetable side dish. I used to buy my breakfast and lunch quite frequently. I stopped drinking beverages with a lot of sugar and replaced them with water or milk. I have been replacing a lot of my pastas with whole wheat pasta. I also got motivated and started going to the gym. Which I actually like to do now. I have noticed many changes. I have lost almost 20 pounds. I also find my new life style has helped me with my depression, and it has also increased the strength in my back and the rest of my body, and I am way less achy than I used to be. I feel way better in general, and am happier with myself.
I follow both and one change I can make is cutting up more veggies into serving sizes that are ready to eat. I can do this even just once a month!

I am working on reducing the amount of sugar we eat in our household and making sure we are getting lots and lots of outdoor exercise.

I am following on facebook and twitter. The one thing we have done to make ourselves healthier is to walk away from food in a box or out of a freezer. When made a conscious change to cook from scratch and eat healthier and we are the better for it. And surprise, surprise, once you get the hang of it, it doesn’t take much extra time and we seem to be saving money too! (We actually make our own salads rather than buy them in a bag, for example!)

Take a walk after dinner!
I follow Healthy Families on twitter (@hgarland) and facebook. One small change I’m making to my daily routine that will improve the health of my family is when grocery shopping picking fresh vegetables, no pop, and less sugary snacks to incorporate into our daily meals. Also cut out all fried foods and fast food drive thrus. This in turn is giving us more energy to be outside and be active
It’s definitely a small change that makes a huge impact!

Our family has started walking to and from school, we also have made a rule of one ‘treat’ per day, unlimited healthy snacks. We have cut out coloured juice and pops and try to cook most of our meals homemade not boxed food so we know exactly what is in it.
I liked them on facebook ( grace mok ) and followed on twitter ( @graceypmok ) The one small thing we’ve done to make our lives healthier is by eating only organic foods now! That includes from vege to meats! And yes..it’s a bit on the expensive side but hey, as long as it’s not detrimental to my body. That’s all that matters!

Following them on Facebook and Twitter, and re-tweeted!
I am working on eating less meat, sugar, and processed foods. I find that often times a smoothie is the easiest way to get my daily dose of fruit and veggies.
Also trying to get myself into a routine of going to the gym 3-4 days a week.
Followed both, and retweeted. One thing I’m doing to help out my families health is learning to can preserves and different fruits/jams without sugar or corn syrup to ensure they’re as healthy as can be, and also adding flax seeds to baking. You can’t taste them and they are a great healthy addition to sneak into any food.
I’ve started carrying a water bottle with me everywhere I go. This way I’m never thirsty (and therefore never tempted to buy sugary juice or pop when I’m out and about.)
Followed and liked!
We need to get back on the regular physical activity track – it seriously makes ALL the difference for me (I just need to learn that him sitting on his butt is no excuse for me to do the same).

We are walking the 25 minutes to school each day instead if taking the car. It is making a difference in our exercise regime. I now know that my boys are getting enough exercise.
I follow them on Facebook & Twitter already! One small change you can make for you family is cutting out High sugar drinks such as pop and limit juice is a great first step.

One small change that I’ve made is instating nightly after dinner walks. It’s taken the place of popping our butts on the couch for the night while also getting some fresh air and exercise.
I already follow Healthy Families on both!
We love to eat veggies from our garden, fruit off our trees, drink plenty of water and are physically active by doing fun activities.
Thank you to both for the giveaway! I heard on the news Vancouver was voted one of the worst dressed cities (MSN list) and they featured Lululemon in the story. Only made me want to buy Lululemon even more!!!!
One healthy change our family has done is incorporate family walks every day

Incorporate more seeds and vegetables into every meal. Even a small quantity I believe will make a difference if it’s done routinely. Also, I don’t really like water. I don’t drink water if I’m not thirsty, and I don’t get thirsty often. I know this is bad, so I’ll try to drink at least 8 cups everyday.

one small change that We are making is to not eat processed food…
I am a fan on Facebook!
One of the changes I’ve made is switching from toothpaste to tooth tabs from Lush. They’re not a paste so they don’t come in a tube. 1 billion toothpaste tubes get thrown into landfills every year. That’s a lot of plastic. They’re also not full of harmful chemicals.
I followed them on Twitter!
Another thing that I participate in isn’t really about food but I help make the laundry soap for the household. I really enjoy mixing the soaps together, then feeling the softness of my clothes and the fresh smell. The other benefits are that my skin is less itchy and the ingredients don’t come in plastic packaging (except the vinegar) , we use a lot less soap. I don’t know how to link your post about the laundry soap but I know you did one! Go homemade laundry soap!
im not a lululemon fan so im not entering but i will tell you the changes ive made, i recently started to slowly replace the kids white bread with brown and i stopped buying hamburger helper and sidekicks instead making from scratch alternatives.
One of the changes we are making in my family is to eat mostly home cooked meals where we can control what goes into our food as much as possible.

One small change we’ve made is to have fruit after dinner instead of something else for dessert. In summer this has mostly been roasted nectarines, sometimes with berries; in fall and winter, we’ll have lots of apples and pears.
